By Firefighter Mike Cline
December 17, 2018

At ~9:16 PM, Westmorland 911 dispatched Station 20 (Murrysville VFC) for an Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) at the Panera Bread Restaurant on William Penn Highway with the business reporting a haze of smoke in the structure. Station 20 responded with Truck 20 (5 fire fighters including Lieutenant 20), Engine 20 (4 firefighters including Sergeant 20), Rescue 20 (3 firefighters), with Chief 20 responding directly to the scene, and 2 firefighters manning Station 20. Westmorland 911 dispatched the following stations to assist Station 20: Station 64 (Engine 64, Heavy Rescue 64), Station 22 (Engine 22-1), Station 78 (Special Operations 78), Station 87 (Truck 87, Squad 87, Command 87), and Station 610 (Ambulance 617, Support 610). Truck 20 was first on scene with a light haze of smoke with the evacuation of the business complete. Interior firefighter teams from Stations 20, 64, and 22 gained entrance to the structure, surveyed the interior visually and with thermal imagery cameras, and found no fire. Truck 20 and Truck 87 laddered the roof with their aerial platforms to inspect the rooftop HVAC units. One RTU was found to have a burned out electric motor. Truck 87 ventilated the building using electric fans to remove any residual smoke, and the building was declared safe for reoccupation. Chief 20 released all responding Fire/Rescue and EMS units for return to service and station.
